Search Engines Vs. Experts-Which One’s Better?

Some people are google people, others are decision engine folks. If I ask.com it, will I find what I am looking for or is it info.com that gives me what I need and more? Our old friends, Aol and Yahoo have served us well, and perhaps over served us. As an information junkie, how is one able to find what they are looking for when they are looking for it? As we spend more and more time searching for the latest and greatest information, is it best to “I’m feeling lucky” or perform a specialized search that will give us highly technical information? And on the flip side, does searching online really get us the best deal and find us who and what we truly need? It depends what you are looking for- and how much information you require to make a decision or come to a conclusion.

I have a different theory that may get some push back from you the readers, why don’t you call an Expert on the phone and ask them?

There are certain things that the internet is great for, finding the local pizza place’s phone number, getting directions from point a to b, or comparison shopping, or juicy celebrity gossip. But once you need to understand a more complicated question than, “Who’s xx dating this week?”, it’s time to break out your internet skills and call someone who is a known Expert in the field. Like you, they know WAY more than they write and read online. They can point you to resources, give you the inside scoop, and potentially give you that connection that even the most amazing social network or search engine can’t. We try so hard to make everything virtual, in the cloud, and impersonal, yet there is something very effective about getting on the phone and going old school. Try it. It might surprise you what you discover.
